HIGHLIGHTS OF SMMTC (2011 – 2014)   


UUM ONLINE: Since its establishment in 2011 where three fields were merged under the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication, SMMTC has strived hard to its fullest potential. Working hand-in-hand, academics and specialists in creative multimedia and media and communication pushed intensely to accomplish success, making sure the KPIs set forth are (for the most part) met.

Year after year, putting aside differences in fields while focusing on the mutual interests, improvements are successfully made. In 2011, a special grant of RM 1.1 million was received for a project on 3D Animation Skill, headed by Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratuddin, where 12 students were sent abroad to Netherlands, China, India and Indonesia for two months to complete their industrial training. The main highlight for 2012 was the offering of a new programme, inspired by YBhg Professor Dato’ Wira Vice Chancellor, Bachelor of Creative Industry Management (BCIM). Also, two best paper awards were received by Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratudin and Prof. Dr. Che Su Mustaffa and their co-authors in two separate international conferences. In 2013, some of the highlights are Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar, the Chairman of Media Prima became the school Adjunct Professor, MoU with the renowned University of Philippine, Diliman was sealed, the launching of BCIM where 20 industry strategic partners lead by Finas and Media Prima were appointed and the award of “Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja UUM 2013” to Yusanani Yushak (Bachelor in Communication).

The year 2014 has seen more achievements. It started with receiving a LRGS grant of the amount RM 1.2 million by Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratuddin and her team. Other highlights are the conferment of Honorary Doctorate to YBhg Dato’ M.Nasir for his accomplishments in the creative industry and the award of again another “Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja UUM 2014” to Nur Sauri Yahya (Bachelor in Multimedia), “Pingat Emas Canselor UUM 2014” to Hanis Salwani Othman (Bachelor in Multimedia) and “Anugerah Pelajar Sarjana Terbaik 2014” to Nuzatul Shima Sulaiman (MSc Managerial Comm).

Other achievements of SMMTC in 2014 are selection of students for one semester sponsored mobility programmes in top world rank university including NUS and exhibition competition abroad. A deal with Orange Tree Production for multiple national projects with staff and students, the infamous Suhaimi Sulaiman (TV3 and now with Astro Awani) agreed to become Adjunct Fellow for a new MSc in Multimedia Journalism Management programme, lecturers being certified professionally for Google Web Academy and iOs, organisations of ICON COMET and iCOME conferences, visit from Chuo University Japan, multiple awards won by 3 of SMMTC student clubs, activities with TV AlHijrah, Ujibakat Pembaca Berita TV3, Appreciation for Film Production Management with Habsah Hassan and Esma Daniel, and journalists associated with the Malaysia Press Institute getting their Masters degrees are also some of the major highlights.

Through out 2011-2014, SMMTC has acquired more than RM 4 million research and special project grants, published about 500 articles in journals, proceedings, monographs, books and magazines, and won more than 30 gold and silver innovation awards. Two of the recent gold awards for 2014 were received by Dr. Siti Mahfuzah Sarif and her team at MTE2014, and AP Abdul Nasir Zulkifli and his team at ITEX 2014. A best paper award for 2014 was obtained by Dr. Ariffin Ab Mutalib and Dr. Siti Mahfuzah Sarif and their PhD student, Nurulnadwan Aziz. In addition, Dr. Bahtiar Mohamad and his team have successfully published articles submitted to the iCOME 2014 conference in the Procedia of Social and Behavioral Science published by Elsevier. The organisation of KMICe 2014 conference in collaboration with the Sch of Computing has too won much acclaims, where the proceedings are indexed by ISI, WoS.

Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratuddin, the Dean, in her statement wishes to thank all the members of the school for their support and team work throughout her deanship. She emphasized that without the strong team work, especially from the school head of departments, coordinators, student club advisors, lecturers and support staff, the school would not have function well. She also stressed the school next challenge is the organisation of the Asian Youth Indie Film Festival (AYIFF) in April 2015.
