LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF THE BACHELOR OF CREATIVE INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT (HONOURS) PROGRAMME
& AIDILFITRI CELEBRATION WITH PRACTITIONERS FROM THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY
KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) underscored its earnest aim to produce knowledgeable practitioners in creative arts with the launch of the Bachelor of Creative Industry Management (Honours) programme, or BCIM, which is to commence in September 2013.
The BCIM programme launch was officiated by the Minister of Education II, YB Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh, on 20 August 2013 at the Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that BCIM was a multi-disciplinary programme that combined key components of management, creativity, business and technology.
The programme, he said, was unique because it was the first of its kind in Malaysia that focused on formal learning for managers who were directly involved in the creative industries.
He elaborated that this relatively new field of human enterprise in Malaysia was in dire need of competent management personnel who could ensure the successful delivery of creative products to the audience. Hence, he said, the programme was designed to provide the students with the requisite skills that would equip them to be effective professionals and managers in the field upon entering the workforce.
In line with UUM’s vision to be an Eminent Management University, he added, management skills were crucial. These management skills, he said, were needed to manage and mobilise all relevant aspects, both in terms of human resources and talent, the technology, the content of the local creative industries, finance, and self-management skills, including planning, organising, recruiting, directing, monitoring, and leadership.
Elaborating on the programme, Mustafa added that the core disciplines (niche areas) which were the mainstay of the programme included film production, music, animation, and interactive media. The need for skilled personnel in these four core disciplines, he said, was very critical in Malaysia.
The field of creative industry is very rich and broad, not confined only to the domestic market. This new field of study has great potential to expand internationally as well as locally especially with Malaysia’s rich mine of undiscovered talents. Dr. Mustafa was confident that the programme in creative industry, if pursued vigorously, would prove to be very lucrative.
The Dean of the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC), Prof. Dr. Norshuhada Shiratuddin, said that the BCIM programme was developed to produce efficient and skilled human capital in managing the creative industry.
Knowledge and management skills blended with creativity and technology tools in the industry, she said, would ensure that the industry continued to grow and remain relevant and sustainable.
She also added that BCIM graduates would be expected to have a firm grasp of the essence of the industry, and complemented with the thorough knowledge acquired during their study at UUM.
Through this programm graduates would be sufficiently equipped to be quality players in the industry, thus boosting the creative industry to the highest level.
Also present at the launching ceremony were the Chairman of the UUM Board of Governors, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, Members of the University Board of Directors, UUM officials, creative artists, as well as reporters from the print and electronic media.
At the same event, letters of appointment were presented to 20 firms selected as UUM’s strategic partners. These comprised leading creative industry players such as FINAS, RTM, Artistes Association of Malaysia (SENIMAN), Media Prima Berhad, Les' Copaque Production Sdn. Bhd., Pesona Pictures Sdn. Bhd., Excellent Pictures, Animonsta Studios, Yuna Room Records, MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn. Bhd, Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn. Bhd., and Music Authors' Copyright Protection (MACP) Berhad.
